Cheesecake Energy Ltd’s (CEL) sustainable energy storage technology, eTanker was attributed the Solar Impulse Efficient Solution label following an assessment performed by external independent experts and based on verified standards. It is thereby joining the #1000solutions challenge, an initiative by the Solar Impulse Foundation to select solutions that meet high standards in profitability and sustainability and present them to decision-makers to fast-track their implementation.
Cheesecake Energy’s eTanker is a stationary, medium-long-duration energy storage solution which delivers cheap, reliable, efficient energy storage in a modular, containerised package. The technology stores energy in the form of heat and pressurised air, adapting ex-service truck engines with our patented modifications to become zero-emission electrical power-conversion machines for putting energy into storage and recovering it from storage. Our proprietary system architecture unlocks low-cost performance in a compact footprint that represents a step change in compressed air energy storage capabilities.
The system is safe, straightforward to operate, has a lifetime of up to 25 years and can deliver turnaround efficiencies of 65 – 70%. eTanker can discharge at full power for up to 20 hours at 30 – 40% lower cost than lithium-ion batteries and can be deployed flexibly as power and energy are scaled separately from one another. The system is portable and requires nothing more than firm flat land at a prospective site. The system can be cycled over 10,000 times and charged and discharged from 100% to 0% and back, without suffering any significant degradation.
“At CEL, we believe that future-proofing our energy systems requires longer-duration, long-term solutions that don’t cost the earth. Our flagship eTanker storage system is built around a commitment to sustainability, ensuring a minimal environmental footprint from design through manufacturing and recycling. By repurposing off-the-shelf hardware from the automotive and compressed natural gas industries, our technology ensures longer cycle-life, capital cost reductions, financial savings and, most of all, long-term sustainability.” said Mike Simpson, CEO, CEL.
“We are honored to receive this designation from Bertrand Piccard and the Solar Impulse Foundation and look forward to working with SIF and its member companies to help achieve our mission to unlock a faster, more affordable transition to a low carbon future.”
To receive the Solar Impulse Efficient Solution label, CEL’s eTanker storage system was thoroughly assessed by a pool of independent experts according to diverse criteria covering the main topics of feasibility, environmental-friendliness and profitability. All labelled solutions are part of the #1000solutions portfolio that will be presented to decision-makers in business and government by Swiss explorer and environmentalist Bertrand Piccard, Chairman of the Solar Impulse Foundation. The aim of this initiative is to encourage the adoption of more ambitious, environmental targets and to fast-track the implementation of innovative solutions on a large scale.
